Fashion trends spring summer 2012

Get new season ready with our need-to-know guide to the trends that count for spring/summer 2012.

Neon Everything For Spring/Summer 2012
I first noticed the neon trend when I was attending the SS12 press days in London late last year. Pretty much every brand that I saw had something neon or fluoro in their collection and I knew it was going to be big! Since then, I have been watching on-line as all of the stores are slowly releasing the trend. So many items are now in neon and I think it's amazing! I'm a big fan of the trend!

Tangerine tango might be the Pantone color of the year but every shade of yellow is the color of the season. Be it pastel, banana, custard or lemon curd, every collection had a dash of the color.

With Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby hitting cinema screens this year, the roaring Twenties is back in vogue. Gucci lead the charge with its deco flapper dresses with Ralph Lauren and Etro close behind.

When it comes to lace this season, think big. Whether it's head-to-toe color-pop lace at Valentino or Miu Miu, or super-sized broderie anglaise at Louis Vuitton and Giambattista Valli, spring/summer 2012 lace should be an outfit's main event.

Lace dresses. Lace is still very hot. But if in previous seasons it was on every item now it is mostly on dresses, to be precise dresses are totally made of it. Of course, it looks beautiful.

A fresh new print hit the catwalks this season, so discard of your autumn/winter 2011 spots - grids and checkerboards are on their way in. Marios Schwab, Gareth Pugh and Christian Dior will show you how it's done.

Be it retro-America at Prada , or cowgirl-chic at Marc Jacobs and Viktor & Rolf , T-shirts emblazoned with the stars and stripes or Miu Miu's prairie girl patchwork, the fashion world are having a dalliance with all things America.

Cropped tops
Start getting ready for spring right now as cropped tops are going to be very trendy during the season. So, your tummy has to be perfect. While cropped tops seem to be very casual they can come in evening outfits as well. Remember the black ensemble Gwyneth Paltrow wore at 2011 Emmys?

This trend was the most popular with designers. Hotpants came in a variety of styles and colors. They were denim, leather, perforated, high and low-waisted, wide and very tight-fitting.

Asymmetrical hemlines
We all like classic but sometimes it seems too boring and we want something different. Designers have offered a lot of new interesting ideas for us to try during Spring/ Summer 2012 season. And one of this is the asymmetrical hemline. Not only dresses come with an asymmetrical hemline. We see plenty of skirts and even jackets cut in the most amazing way possible.

Animal prints
When someone says ‘animal print’ the first thing that comes to our mind is the leopard – the print we love and hate, it's appealing but it's been too long with us already. However, some designers still choose it for their collections. Now leopard print is not that one we're used to. It comes in a variety of colors and the print itself has become smaller and more delicate. Along with leopard we see snake-skin and crocodile skin but other patterns are even trendier – those featuring lizards, cats and birds.

While black and white tones are the most traditional combination of colors for formal clothing, which isn't normally very original in design, in the new season everything is going to be different. Black-and-white pieces on the runway were playful, stylish and chic. Girls paraded in feminine cocktail dresses, translucent gowns, leather suits teamed with sexy blouses, etc.

Boat neck
Despite the fact boat neckline doesn't show your cleavage to its best it does demonstrate the beauty of your shoulders. For formal occasions designers offer more demure versions of this trend but for casual garments neckline can go as deep as you wish.

Boudoir fashion
Boudoir fashion has had a revival for Spring/ Summer 2012 fashion season. It isn't as daring as it used to be but is still very sexy and erotic. Sheer slinky fabrics, lace trimming, ruffles and revealing necklines and splits – all these will be really trendy.

Cold shoulders
We don't remember who invented the cold shoulder but we should say ‘thank you’ to him as these shoulders are amazing. They make the entire outfit look relaxed and seductive.

Fringe wasn't in every Spring/ Summer 2012 collection but where it was it looked fantastic. Think of a good way of adding it to your wardrobe.

Perforated fabrics
While perforated material looks a bit rough it can actually be rather stylish if a designer knows how to put it right into an outfit. During Spring/ Summer 2012 fashion show we have seen a few examples of this technique and our favorite is by Giles and Chloe. Which one do you prefer?

One shoulder
We have seen just a few examples of one-shoulder look in Fall/ Winter 2011/ 2012 collections but now it's trendy again. Designers don't only drape it they beautify it with pleats, embroidery and crystals.

Peplums have been seen a lot on the red carpet before, and now there are many of them on the runway featured on dresses, skirts, and trousers. Peplums look lovely but there is a problem with them as well. They add volume to your hips. It is all right if you are slim and don't mind a little extra puff in that part of your body. In case you consider it a problem area peplums are to be avoided.

Pleats were trendy last spring and summer, they have somehow stayed with us during fall and winter and, to our surprise, pleats are to be still popular during Spring/ Summer 2012 season. But they won't be as girly any more. Pleats of the Spring/ Summer 2012 are fewer, larger and softer. They come on dresses mostly and give those a womanly look.

Print mix
Just like pleats print mix trend has come to us from the previous seasons. And it has also transformed. Now when designers mix prints they think of harmony though some still win from the contrast.

Rounded shoulders
This trend is as ridiculous as the low-crotch one that we finally kissed goodbye in summer. Rounded shoulders don't make you look leaner or sexier, they do quite the opposite thing. Still, it is a trend and there will be ladies to wear it.

Sheer clothing
Sheerness became trendy long ago when someone decided that revealing too much flesh was great. Now we take it pretty normal and even like it. For Spring/ Summer 2012 fashion season designers offer us to wear sheer skirts which can be both floor or knee-length. They also suggest us trying transparent toppers. And if before people wore these to cover themselves from the rain from now on these would be worn no matter what the weather was.

Summer suits
Summer suits can hardly be worn to a real office but they look so smart and stylish that ladies will still rock them. Made in a variety of colors and prints summer suits can come trimmed with lace which looks very cute. And while designers team those up with shirts and ties you can experiment with different items in your wardrobe to create the unique look.

Total white

If for winter designers shows us the total black look for summer they reasonably offer the total white look.

Wide shorts
During last summer we all wore pleats and shorts. And we will wear both again. But pleats became softer and shorts got wider.

Stripes Are Still Hot For 2012 !
One of the big trends this season is anything striped... Expect to see lots of stripe, not only on wonderful nautical knit tops, but dresses, handbags, and even shoes...

Check out photo above outfit of "Michael Kors" design - He used a very simple classical nautical striped top, and mixed it up with a long button cardigan, and flare a-line skirt ... The results - a chic casual look.

Bows on dresses - Spring 2012 trend

I love this trend. Dresses embellished with bows. So cute and perfect for spring.

Printed jeans
Printed jeans, one of spring 2012 key trends. Leopard print that was already very popular during the summer and fall of 2011, remains a great choice.

Wear printed jeans with a pair of court shoes and a nice simple sweater or blouse. I love the way Whitney Ports rocks the printed jeans trend.
